A 3D animation of the bacterial flagellar motor, drawn from Protein Data Bank structures, being upgraded part by part: more stator units join the ring, each is swapped for a sodium-driven stator, a scaffold locks on and the stator ring widens, the hook is replaced, and the filament grows longer. The motor spins faster as it goes, then runs and the sequence repeats.
